The story first made me really angry at the protagonist and then I realized that your writing achieved the goal.

Once I was assuaged I realized this story has multiple layers in it.

for one, it asks the question rather loudly as to whether love is permanent, etched in stone as we have grown to believe or is it transient and is no different than a toy that we immensely love playing with initially. While this can differ from person to person, I also think that though Love can first be a function of attraction, lust and comfort level, later on as one grows old the coefficient of comfort level grows higher and the other ones reduce to such minimal levels that they can be ignored. So ultimately its the person with whom you wont mind taking a 15 hour journey alone.

As for the protagonist being an ass, I guess I liked it because not all stories have to have a the guy who follows all socially accepted norms as the protagonist. There are people like this too and this story tried to bring out the state of mind of one such person. Judging him or not is another thing.

The reason I lauded you for this attempt is, it has become very difficult off late to tell a story from another person's perspective, especially if its not a good( by normal standards) person, without people getting upset and angry about the story/character.

@ Nivi
To be brutally honest, I did not have any great insight as I sat down to write this story; it was meant more to be of a play on the reader rather than some deep insightful take on love.

However, since you have started a topic, personally, I have stopped believing in love, and have shifted my attention to the two things that you have mentioned, lust and comfort. In the end it all comes down to comfort, for that is the one thing that has the potential to give a person peace, and peace is something that everyone is in search of.

Finally, it is harder to develop someone who does not appease the reader, for the reader tries to find something to be appeased from. The reason, in my opinion that a reader has problems with negative characters is that they come here to read about the good in the world, and not the bad sides. When they encounter a negative person, they are disillusioned and therein lies the anger and emotion.

Cheers
